One of the things we know about inflation expectations is that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell relies heavily on them. He thinks about expectations, gives speeches on them, and uses the data series when enacting Federal Reserve policies to combat inflation. The problem is that all consumer surveys (including inflation expectations) are deeply problematic.

From the MBA: Mortgage Applications Increase in Latest MBA Weekly Survey Mortgage applications increased 3.8 percent from one week earlier, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association’s (MBA) Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending September 16, 2022. Last week’s results include an adjustment for the Labor Day holiday. The Refinance Index increased 10 percent from the previous week and was 83 percent lower than the same week one year ago.
