Here is a graph of the year-over-year change in shelter from the CPI report and housing from the PCE report this morning, both through May 2023. CPI Shelter was up 8.0% year-over-year in May, down from 8.1% in April, and down from the cycle peak of 8.2% in March 2023. Housing (PCE) was up 8.3% YoY in May , down from 8.4% in April (April was the cycle peak).

The BEA released the Personal Income and Outlays report for May: Personal income increased $91.2 billion (0.4 percent at a monthly rate) in May , according to estimates released today by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Disposable personal income (DPI), personal income less personal current taxes, increased $86.7 billion (0.4 percent) and personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $18.9 billion (0.1 percent).
From BofA: Personal spending came in slight below expectations and with a downward revision in April. Overall, this decreased our personal consumption expenditure tracking estimate for 2Q. The BEA's Personal Income and Outlays report for May was published this morning by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The latest headline PCE price index was up 0.1% month-over-month (MoM) and dropped to 3.8% year-over-year (YoY). Core PCE was also up 0.3% monthly and fell to 4.6% year-over-year, still well above the Fed's 2% target rate.
