Every time stocks fall a little, investors fear they will fall a lot. And every time they fall a lot, people think they're going to sink even lower. Before we talk about how much lower stocks can fall, let's take a look at the current decline. The people's index, the Dow, is down just 14% from its peak. The S&P is down 18%. The Nasdaq lost 28%, and the Russell 2k fell 30%.

As the wheels fall off the market, now is a good time to reflect on some of the timeless lessons we learned during a very specific period in time. Nothing lasts forever. When growth stocks were going up every day, it felt like it would never end. Now that growth stocks are going down, it feels like it will never end. Everything ends, eventually. Survival is the most important thing.

Many retired Americans find Social Security benefits confusing, especially when trying to understand possible tax consequences. In fact, retirees could face paying taxes on up to 85% of their Social Security benefits because combined income from Social Security and other income streams can quickly push them above the thresholds for taxes to apply. Additionally, the number of beneficiaries who are required to pay Social Security income tax is rising, and it will continue to grow.
