Techniques to reach Top of the Table

There are many strategies MDRT members use to reach Top of the Table-level production, and some are simply a matter of small adjustments in perspective. George D. Goulet, TEP, CFSB, a 27-year MDRT member from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, recommends these two ways to elevate your practice.

1. Creative positive focus and urgency on a daily basis

Benjamin Franklin, a founding father of the United States, is credited with saying, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” His routine was to wake up every morning at 5 a.m.

He attributed his astonishing level of productivity throughout his life to what he did when he first woke up every morning. Immediately upon waking, he would ask himself, “What good shall I do this day?” Midday he would ask himself, “Am I doing the good I intended to do this day?” At the end of each day, he would then ask, “What good did I do this day?”

2. Set big long-term goals and break down into short-term goals

Big goals are what truly inspire, excite and motivate us to achieve.

Let’s say you enjoy traveling and you have always wanted to go to Spain. Having “Travel to Spain within the next three years” is a great goal, but there is so much more you can do with it. A big lifetime goal might be that you want to travel to 50 countries during your lifetime. You might have a goal to visit 20 countries over the next 10 years. During the next three years, you might want to go on a European trip to visit seven countries, including Spain. During the next year, your goal may be that you want to go on a Caribbean cruise that stops in three countries. Your goal for the next quarter might be to research different cruise options and to determine a date prior to next June to take the cruise. Your weekly goal might be to have a coffee date with your spouse for an hour to discuss travel goals to make sure you are in alignment on the places you want to go.
